The Girl has its roots in Riker’s debut feature, La Ciudad. Filmed over the course of five years in New York’s Latin American immigrant community, the film explores the immigrant experience of loneliness, displacement, and economic hardship with a poetic and realistic lens.
The Making of a Community Film
Inspired by the promise of a neo-realist cinema in America, Riker cast non-professional actors in almost every role in La Ciudad, and wrote the stories in collaboration with the subjects of the film – day laborers, garment workers, and other newly uprooted immigrants in New York City.
The Making Of A Community Film tells the story of this unique creative collaboration from the inside out.
